Ethiopian Coffee

With a rich coffee culture that dates back to ancient times, Ethiopia has cemented its position as the largest coffee producer in Africa and the third largest globally in terms of Arabica production. It is widely acknowledged to be the birthplace of the beloved brew, and it features some of the most complex and exotic flavors on the coffee map. Three primary coffee-growing regions- Yirgacheffe, Sidamo, and Harrar- make up the Ethiopian coffee industry, each with unique flavor notes and processing techniques. Ethiopian coffee is cherished worldwide, and its high-quality beans remain in high demand across the globe.

Coffee Processing Methods

Ethiopia is renowned for its diverse coffee processing techniques, leveraging factors such as regional variations and individual farming methods. Wet-washed and sun-dried processing are the two predominant techniques utilized in coffee cultivation.

Wet-washed processing is esteemed for its ability to yield high-quality coffee that stands out for its vibrant fruity notes. The sorting process, which involves soaking the harvested cherries in water for about 12 hours, ensures that only the best-quality beans are taken to the raised bed for drying.

Meanwhile, sun-dried (natural) processing is the most commonly used technique in Ethiopia. The cherries are carefully hand-sorted, and the best cherries are dried in the sun for about three weeks. Sun-dried natural coffees benefit from intense berry flavors and tropical fruit aromatics, thanks to the meticulous care and attention to detail employed during processing.

Yirgacheffe Coffee

Yirgacheffe, a region situated in Southern Ethiopia, is renowned for its exceptional coffee production. Its remarkable coffee beans are the result of ideal weather conditions, high altitude, rich soil and a tropical climate, which provide the perfect environment for coffee plants to flourish. The combination of all these factors creates an exceptional quality of coffee worldwide, making Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee highly celebrated for its exceptional taste. Its delicate flavor profile is characterized by floral and tea-like notes that shimmer with citrus accents, and a light-bodied, crisp finish. This unique coffee from Yirgacheffe is considered a top choice among coffee enthusiasts worldwide.

Sidamo coffee

Sidamo is a highly-regarded coffee-growing region located in Southern Ethiopia – a destination frequented by seasoned coffee aficionados. This area is rich in lush highlands, nutrient-dense volcanic soil, and is bestowed with optimal climatic conditions, which are all crucial ingredients for the coffee production process. In the Sidamo region, the climate is ideal, rainfall is plentiful, and the soil is highly fertile, which translates into a coffee that has an exquisite taste profile. This coffee is known for its velvety texture, unique aroma, and subtle hints of lemon, tart berries, and sugarcane sweetness. The high-altitude growing conditions contribute to the complex flavor profile of these beans. Overall, Sidamo coffee is truly exceptional, and has a lot to offer those who savor a high-quality coffee.
